  • The CUPRA Tavascan proves to be among the safest cars on the European market, scoring highly in all four categories: Adult occupant: 89%, Child occupant: 86%, Vulnerable road users: 80%, Safety assist: 79%
  • The Tavascan’s result follows on from the successes of the CUPRA Formentor, CUPRA Leon, and CUPRA Born.

Martorell, 13-11-2024 CUPRA continues its high safety scores in the challenging Euro NCAP safety tests as the CUPRA Tavascan achieved a 5-star rating. The all-electric SUV coupe joins the CUPRA Formentor, CUPRA Leon and CUPRA Born in achieving the highest rating possible and signifies the brand's determination to deliver the safest cars possible.

Euro NCAP testing is renowned for pushing vehicles to be as safe as possible, to address the safety for both occupants and vulnerable road users. The tests have been updated over the years to make sure they include the latest procedures and encompass the most up to date technologies available making the CUPRA Tavascan's achievement even more.

"Safety is a key pillar of CUPRA's approach to vehicle development, delivering vehicles that not only meet customer needs, but also place their well-being at the forefront," said Dr. Werner Tietz, Executive Vice-President for Research and Development at CUPRA. "The CUPRA Tavascan's result after undergoing Euro NCAP's rigorous testing highlights the hard work of the development team and the brand's willingness to develop the safest vehicles possible."

The CUPRA Tavascan integrates a wide range of advanced driver assistance and safety systems, all designed to make sure occupants and vulnerable road users are kept away from harm.

A suite of onboard systems including Traffic Sign Recognition, Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Speed Adaptation, Side Assist, Lane Assist, Exit Warning, Exit Assist, Fatigue Detection and Rear View eSmart Camera all help the driver stay alert.

While other systems such as Front Assist, with swerve support and turn assist, prevent or mitigate possible damage in an emergency situation, monitoring other road users such as cars, pedestrians, and bicycles.

But the CUPRA Tavascan is also designed to help minimise the impact on external vulnerable road users with the introduction of the active bonnet*. In the event of an imminent collision with a vulnerable road user, the rear section of the car's bonnet is automatically raised. This action increases the distance between the bonnet and the rigid fixed parts, creating more space for controlled deformation upon impact. By providing additional cushioning, the system helps to reduce the severity of head injuries.

The use of these systems is why the CUPRA Tavascan scored so highly in each of the individual Euro NCAP test areas: Adult Occupant 89%, Child Occupant 86%, Vulnerable Road User 80% and Safety Assist 79%.

Euro NCAP is constantly re-evaluating its testing procedures, introducing new criteria to make sure vehicles remain as safe as possible, and CUPRA is determined to make sure its vehicles continue to score highly no matter what the tests. The CUPRA Tavascan's 5-star results is testament to the brands dedication.

The active bonnet is a standard feature on all CUPRA Tavascan produced from June 2024 (Q3/2024)

Audi’s most powerful production vehicle: The new RS e-tron GT performance

  • Higher performance: Advanced drive systems and adapted thermal management enable up to 680 kW (925 PS) of output
  • More exclusive: Specially developed RS performance mode and push-to- pass function offer optimal setup for challenging coastal roads and winding mountain passes
  • Dynamic duo: High-performance tires with more grip at high lateral acceleration or innovative tires with improved sustainability and optimized rolling resistance

Ingolstadt/Neckarsulm, September 17, 2024 – With the Audi RS e-tron GT performance*, Audi is debuting its first fully electric RS performance model. The four-door coupé demonstrates bundled technical expertise – and Audi’s passion for details. Powerful, sporty, and confident, it reflects the brand’s high standards for developing and building cars. The RS e-tron GT performance* is the dynamic flagship for electric mobility at Audi.

In addition to a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PSM) on the front axle with a reinforced driveshaft and an output of 252 kW (342 PS), the electric Gran Turismo features a newly developed PSM on the rear axle with an output of 415 kW (564 PS). The increased copper density of the special hairpin winding in the electric motors’ stator maximizes current conduction. Moreover, the rotor in the electric motor at the rear is more compact and lighter. Overall, Audi has reduced the weight of the electric motor on the rear axle by ten kilos. What’s more, both electric motors have power reserves for dynamic driving situations. Launch Control can briefly use resources from the HV battery and the electric motors for an output of up to 680 kW / 925 PS (combined power consumption: 20.8–18.7 kWh / 100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km; CO2 class: A).

Moreover, the front axle features modified power electronics with a revised pulse inverter, enabling higher discharge currents of up to 600 amps – 300 amps more than in the other variants, the Audi S e-tron GT* and the Audi RS e-tron GT*. The rear axle also operates at 600 amps. Audi has increased braking recuperation to 400 kW. *The collective fuel/electric power consumption and emissions values of all models named and available on the German market can be found in the list provided at the end of this text. 2/7 The maximum deceleration value is 4.5 m/s2. Up to this value, the car relies solely on recuperation. Coasting recuperation was increased to 0.6 m/s2 and 1.3 m/s2 (previously 0.3 and 0.6).

In this way, Audi has widened the spread between the dynamic one-pedal feel and efficient coasting. “This allows us to increase efficiency while responding to what our customers want. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the car achieves a distinctly noticeable deceleration, which makes for sporty driving,” says Jaan Mattes Reiling, Technical Project Manager for the Audi e-tron GT model family.

Adapted thermal management for stable extra output
One of the development goals for the performance model was high efficiency across all load ranges and repeat output availability. This makes for more reproducibility and superior performance. Adapted thermal management and intelligent interconnection of the four coolant circuits play a vital role – especially in RS performance mode, which is an exclusive feature of the top model. When increased output is used, the thermal management system switches on the AC circuit to ensure the HV battery is sufficiently cooled. The adapted cooling circuit conditions the interior while simultaneously and actively lowering the temperature in the coolant circuits of the HV battery and the two electric motors in the RS e-tron GT performance*. Cooling of the electric motors, interior air conditioning, and conditioning of the HV battery can now be controlled largely independently of each other. Audi made significant changes to pumps and valves to optimize the performance of the thermal management system.

The new cell chemistry is also partly responsible for the increased output of the RS e-tron GT performance*, with an adjusted mixing ratio of nickel, cobalt, and manganese and a gross storage capacity of 105 kWh (97 kWh net). This results in higher energy capacity and higher charging and driving currents compared to the predecessor model. The maximum charging currents have been increased to 400 amps. When Launch Control is activated, up to 1,100 amps of current can flow.

This is also the case when using the new push-to-pass function in the RS e-tron GT performance*, which provides a 70-kW increase in output at speeds above 30 km/h for up to ten seconds – as indicated by a timer in the virtual cockpit. When the driver activates push-to-pass, the battery uses the same map as for Launch Control. At the same time, the drive components automatically switch to the Audi drive select mode dynamic. After a minimum of ten seconds of regeneration, the function can be activated again. A new cooling plate with U-Flow architecture ensures homogeneous heat and cold transfer. The warmest cells in the HV battery always limit the charging current. At Audi, the guiding principle of “performance” also applies to the charging experience. The maximum charging power has been increased by 50 kW up to 320 kW. This allows the vehicle’s HV battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in only 18 minutes at a high-power charging (HPC) station under ideal conditions.

Active suspension and Audi drive select with individually configurable RS modes
A newly developed air suspension with 2-chamber/2-valve technology comes as standard. It affords distinct advantages in terms of driving dynamics without compromising on comfort. For the first time, an innovative, wheel-selective active suspension system is available as an option. “Our goal was to significantly increase the spread between driving comfort and driving dynamics and make it more noticeable,” explains Carsten Jablonowski, Lead Engineer of the Audi Driving Characteristics Development Team. “In line with the Audi philosophy, the exceptional driving comfort of comfort mode underscores the Gran Turismo concept on the one hand. On the other hand, the ability to actively control the movements of the car’s body makes for optimal driving dynamics, which the driver can experience thanks to the steering system, which we have further optimized. In this way, we have made the ride comfortable and the driving dynamic, controllable through the high-precision steering,” Jablonowski adds.

The Audi drive select dynamic handling system lets the driver control the vehicle’s character as usual. It features three profiles: efficiency, comfort, and dynamic. In addition, two individually configurable, RS-specific modes, RS1 and RS2, allow the driver to select drive, suspension, ride height, and sound. The driver can set these modes directly on the right-hand control satellite of the two red control satellites on the steering wheel, which is flattened at the top and bottom.

As an exclusive feature, the RS e-tron GT performance* has RS performance mode, which is designed for an optimal setup on challenging circuits and winding mountain passes. The vertical wheel forces were designed for optimal dynamics in this mode. The special characteristics allow the drive torque to be optimally controlled at the handling limits. Performance mode also changes the characteristics for anti-slip control, torque vectoring, suspension tuning, aerodynamics, and cooling strategy. In performance mode, the car uses the same switching strategy as in dynamic mode. This means that the RS e-tron GT performance* stays in the first gear of its two-speed gear as long as possible to make acceleration more dynamic.

High-performance tires for more grip or long-range tires for everyday use The Audi RS e-tron GT performance* comes as standard with 20-inch wheels. Tires optimized for rolling resistance on the new multi-spoke wheels ensure a long range.

The optional 21-inch versions offer five wheel designs and two tires with different characteristics. The Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires have very low rolling resistance, improving power consumption and range. Their mix and interior construction have been specially adapted for the RS e-tron GT performance*. The designers paid particular attention to the materials used to make these customized tires without compromising on safety or performance. The tires incorporate 55 percent renewable or recycled materials, including 35 percent from renewable sources such as natural rubber and 20 percent recycled content such as crumb rubber or carbon black from used tires.

The pinnacle of driving dynamics for the Audi RS e-tron GT performance*, the performance tires have been proven on the racetrack and had their driving characteristics tested in a wide range of environmental conditions. Their increased grip improves the driving dynamics on dry and wet road surfaces, enabling higher lateral acceleration, more precise steering response, and optimized braking performance. Even on winding mountain stages, the performance tires have enough reserves to keep the RS e-tron GT performance* moving with all the sportiness you would expect from a Gran Turismo.

Carbon camouflage combines aesthetic sophistication and functionality
The design elements of the Audi RS e-tron GT performance* are highly distinctive. The optional matte darkened carbon roof can be combined with other optional carbon camouflage elements, which Audi is using for the first time and are available exclusively for this derivative. Carbon camouflage is used in the inlays in the bumper, the rocker panel, parts of the diffuser, and side mirrors. The new exterior finish Bedford Green is also available specifically for the RS e-tron GT performance*.

“As an absolute design statement, every detail of the RS e-tron GT performance* has been perfectly coordinated, from the carbon roof to the seat belts, from the exterior to the interior. It is an RS e-tron GT all the way down. The way that we use the material, carbon has no directionality; it looks different from every perspective,” says Christopher Kröner, the Color & Trim Designer responsible for this innovation at Audi. “This is crucial because our Gran Turismo is like a sculpture that can be approached from all sides, so it has to have that effect all around. Depending on the lighting, it appears agile at times, discreet and restrained at others. What sounds like a contradiction is the perfect balance between sportiness and elegance. ”

As another interior highlight, the performance model features a new and exclusive design package with Serpentine Green stitching to match the Bedford Green exterior and 18-way adjustable seats. The decorative inlays are also available in matte carbon camouflage to match the exterior. A tribute to the 1994 Audi Avant RS 2, where the analog dials also came in white, the RS e-tron GT performance* features a white Power Meter and speedometer as a special digital feature.

Sporty sound experience re-enhanced in detail In the RS e-tron GT performance*, the customer can control the vehicle sound – from the quiet of an electric drive to a progressive sound experience. The sporty, voluminous, and high-quality e- tron Sport sound comes as standard. As an audible expression of the progressive Gran Turismo character, the sound in the passenger compartment was re-enhanced for the performance model. The sound was harmonized in detail, especially in the no-load speed range of 70 to 90 km/h. Two control units and amplifiers in the trunk generate separate exterior and interior sounds emitted through two speakers, one outside and one inside the vehicle.

The digital sound is based on data such as the speed of the electric motors, the position of the accelerator pedal, the speed of the vehicle, and other parameters. The result is a synthetic sound sampled from 32 individual sources – ranging from a variety of real recordings to edited synthesizer audio – that supports the operation of the drive system in an authentic and highly nuanced way.

Precision, perfection, passion, and love of detail – small-series production at Böllinger Höfe The new RS e-tron GT performance* is also being built at the Audi Sport GmbH production facility at Audi’s Neckarsulm site. At Böllinger Höfe, specially tailored new technologies are used, but the final pass is left to experienced employees with sharp eyes and steady hands. The approximately 500 employees at the Böllinger Höfe production facility received comprehensive, advanced training for the new e-tron GT model family. Before the start of production, some processes and systems were adapted to enable the installation of the new product highlights. For example, mounting the innovative active suspension was integrated as a new step of installation preparation.

Immediately afterward, in cycle 20 of the assembly line, the so-called “marriage” of the Audi e-tron GT* takes place with the joining of the assembled body and the battery, electric motors, and suspension. These major technological building blocks are placed on a workpiece carrier that runs on a roller conveyor and can be positioned under the body with millimeter precision. Using intelligent, self-positioning tools, employees bolt the battery and drive components to the body at 74 different points.

Small-series production at Böllinger Höfe serves as a real-world laboratory for advancing digitalization in production and logistics. Intelligent solutions for the fully connected and smart factory are tested, refined, and ultimately adapted here for large-volume production, for example in the Neckarsulm plant.

Martorell, 28/12/2024. The SEAT Leon is marking its 26th anniversary this year. Since it was originally launched in 1999, this car has been leading the way in the compact segment over the course of four generations, always determined to innovate in terms of design, technology, sportiness and equipment. The SEAT Leon has consistently been ahead of its time, and the following milestones are proof of this:

Leading the way from Barcelona. SEAT is honoured that one of its most successful cars is designed, developed and produced entirely in Barcelona, where more than 2.5 million units of the SEAT Leon have been manufactured to date.

A statement of intent. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the first generation SEAT Leon arrived with a bang, as it signalled SEAT’s return to the compact car segment. What better way to make its mark than by being the brand’s first model featuring four-wheel drive, powered with a six-speed gearbox and delivering up to 180 hp.

A constant evolution. The second generation arrived in 2005, sporting a bolder, more aerodynamic design that was the brainchild of Walter de Silva. He revolutionised a traditionally classic segment with an exterior featuring recessed rear door handles that made it look like a 2-door model. This car combined sportiness, both visually and in terms of performance, with more efficient engines. Its successor, the third generation SEAT Leon, was a turning point in the history of the brand, defining a before and after. The use of cutting-edge technology in infotainment systems, driver safety assistance and the fact that it was the first compact car to integrate full LED lighting were some of the keys to its success. This combination of advanced engineering and elegant design consolidated it as one of the most outstanding models in its segment, being the best-selling generation of the SEAT Leon to date, exceeding the threshold of one million units delivered.

At the forefront of change. The fourth generation SEAT Leon is the most technologically advanced in the history of the brand, as it’s the very first 100% connected vehicle. It also has five different powertrains, including the e-HYBRID, which in its day was SEAT’s first electric plug-in hybrid. The company’s commitment has gone even further with the latest update unveiled for its 26th anniversary. It now features a new 1.5 e-HYBRID engine with 133 km of electric range, it enables fast charging in just 26 minutes, and improves both safety and lighting systems, with innovative Matrix LED headlights that make it possible to drive with thehigh beams activated without dazzling other drivers. It’s a model that continues to demonstrate its leadership and is synonymous with smart mobility.

International recognition. The SEAT Leon has won dozens of awards since its debut, from the 2014 and 2021 ‘Car of the Year’ awards in Spain to the 2021 ‘Car of the Year’ and ‘Family Car of the Year’ awards in Portugal and the 2021 ‘Import Car of the Year’ award in Argentina. But the distinctions go beyond performance on the road, as its sporty prowess has also led to victories on the racetrack: the second generation SEAT Leon won back-to-back World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) titles in 2008 and 2009, making it the first brand in history powered by a diesel engine to win a FIA (International Automobile Federation) world title.

Making its mark. The SEAT Leon’s success goes beyond sales, with star appearances in films such as 3 Days to Kill and Men in Black: International, or in the series Dark and Sherlock. Its popularity has also given rise to quirky versions such as the SEAT Leon Trencadís in 2020, which was a tribute to the architect Antonio Gaudí. It featured a unique exterior camouflage, inspired by the artistic technique of reusing broken tiles to create mosaics. Meanwhile, the SEAT Leon Cristobal was a concept car created in 2018 that was fitted with up to 16 safety assistants to prevent as many traffic accidents as possible. During these past 26 years, the SEAT Leon has been the star of unforgettable moments, leaving a legacy that continues to lead the way into the future.

SEAT is one of Spain’s most iconic and recognisable international brands. Founded over 70 years ago, SEAT cars have been part of people’s lives for generations. With eye-catching designs created in Barcelona, SEAT is the gateway to new clients for the Volkswagen Group. The SEAT brand currently offers models from the most efficient, traditional combustion powertrains to mild and plug-in hybrids: the SEAT Ibiza, the brand’s youthful car; SEAT Arona, a versatile urban SUV; the SEAT Leon and Leon Sportstourer, the spacious and sporty compact cars; and the SEAT Ateca, the SUV with modern and striking design.

25 Years of the Škoda Fabia: Sustained success over four generations

Mladá Boleslav, 13 September 2024 – For the past 25 years, the Škoda Fabia has played an indispensable role in the history of the Škoda brand and the small car segment. The first generation made its debut on 14 September 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, quickly winning over customers with its advanced technology. The subsequent three generations built on that foundation, with nearly five million units sold to date. The Fabia has also left a lasting mark on motorsport, entering the scene in 2003 with the Škoda Fabia WRC, a legacy that the current Fabia RS Rally2 continues with considerable success.

When the all-new Škoda Fabia took centre stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, 14 September 1999, it marked the beginning of a remarkable success story for the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker in the small car segment. Even after a quarter of a century, this legacy lives on in the fourth-generation Fabia, which continues to enjoy high demand internationally thanks to its proven strengths, such as spaciousness, agility and excellent value for money.

First-generation Škoda Fabia (1999 – 2008)

The Škoda Fabia was among the main premieres at the 58th Frankfurt Motor Show. It debuted as a five-door hatchback, measuring 3,960 mm in length, and was positioned as the successor to the Škoda Felicia. Less than a year after its launch, an estate version followed, and in 2001, a saloon went into production. The design of the first-generation Fabia was created by a team of around twenty designers, led by Škoda’s then-head of design, Dirk van Braeckel. The first-generation Fabia was built on the advanced small car platform PQ24, and offered a wide range of powertrains. In March 2003, the sporty RS variant made its debut – with a powerful 1.9 TDI turbo diesel engine producing 96 kW, combining dynamic performance and fuel efficiency.

Second-generation Škoda Fabia (2007 – 2014)

In March 2007, the second-generation Škoda Fabia premiered at the Geneva Motor Show. Based on the same platform as the first generation, the new model was slightly longer (+22 mm) and taller (+47 mm). In September 2007, the practical estate version was unveiled. In 2009, the Scout variant and the RS version with a 1.4 TSI petrol turbocharged engine (132 kW) joined the line-up. This Fabia generation featured the popular Monte Carlo version for the first time.

Third-generation Škoda Fabia (2014 – 2022)

The third-generation Škoda Fabia was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014.Technologically, it benefited from the modern PQ26 platform, while the design took on sharper and more dynamic lines, aided by a change in proportions; the car was 90 mm wider and 30 mm lower than its predecessor. Significant improvements were made to the safety and comfort features, as well. For the first time, the Škoda Fabia was equipped with Front Assist, adaptive cruise control, and a driver fatigue monitoring system. The 2018 facelift further expanded the model’s features, introducing full LED headlights and blind-spot monitoring.

Fourth-generation Škoda Fabia (2021 – present)

The most recent generation of the Škoda Fabia was introduced in the spring of 2021 as a five-door hatchback, built on the MQB A0 platform. Its design is the work of a team led by Head of Škoda Design, Oliver Stefani. The fourth generation exceeds 4.1 metres in length, and its boot space has increased to 380 litres, 50 litres more than the previous generation. The vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art features such as Travel Assist 2.0, Automatic Parking, Lane Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Side Assist for lane changes, and Front Assist with predictive pedestrian and cyclist protection.

Dominance in motorsport

Across all generations, the Škoda Fabia has made a remarkable impact on the international rally world. After Škoda entered this motorsport segment with the first-generation Fabia WRC (2003), the Czech car manufacturer shifted its focus with the second generation towards a more affordable competition category. In 2009, the Škoda Fabia Super 2000 hit the rally scene, achieving a host of successes for both the Škoda Motorsport factory team and customer teams worldwide. However, the true milestone that solidified the Mladá Boleslav brand’s expertise in motorsport came with the third generation Fabia in 2015, when the car entered the WRC2 category. Racing teams around the world purchased over 470 Rally2 and Rally2 evo cars, making them the best-selling and most successful rally specials to date. The current fourth-generation Fabia serves as the basis for the Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, which continues its road to success with victories in national and international championships.

High performance in a practical package. That’s ENYAQ RS iV

A second all-electric car has been added to ŠKODA’s RS sporting family. This is the ENYAQ RS iV, which follows up the ENYAQ COUPÉ RS iV that was launched some time ago. The new ENYAQ RS iV delivers similar performance and features to the COUPÉ, but also enjoys the benefits that come from a more practical SUV body.

The new model boasts the most advanced technology of the MEB platform and, together with its sibling, is the most powerful production car in ŠKODA’s history. The ENYAQ RS iV is powered by the same pair of electric motors as the COUPÉ version. This setup gives the car all-wheel drive and an output of up to 220 kW, enabling the ENYAQ RS iV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The top speed is 180 km/h, 20 km/h more than the other models in the range. Drivers will enjoy the massive torque of 460 Nm from virtually zero revs. This makes for a great dynamic driving experience.

At the same time, though, the ENYAQ RS iV promises a range of over 500 kilometres per charge thanks to its 82 kWh battery and superior aerodynamics (air drag coefficient of 0.265). One way this combination of excellent driving experience and great efficiency is achieved is through the ENYAQ RS iV’s lowered chassis. A 15-millimetre reduction at the front and a 10-millimetre reduction at the rear results in sportier handling and better aerodynamics, while giving the driver more control and better feedback.

As with the ENYAQ COUPÉ RS iV, the thrilling driving experience does not compromise the ENYAQ RS iV’s practicality. This is further enhanced by the conventionally shaped SUV body, which features a boot capacity of 585 litres, 15 litres more than the coupé. With the rear seats folded down, the ENYAQ RS iV offers a load capacity of up to 1,710 litres.

The focus on practicality is evident in the car's powertrain and the ecosystem ŠKODA is building for charging purposes. The ENYAQ RS iV’s battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in 36 minutes thanks to a maximum charging power of 135 kW. The Plug & Charge function is a new feature that allows charging to start automatically on supported chargers without the need for activation via an app or authorisation card. ENYAQ RS iV owners can continue to enjoy all the benefits of POWERPASS with more than 350,000 charging points across Europe. ŠKODA AUTO also offers customers other solutions, such as the installation of home wallboxes.

Volkswagen’s worldwide deliveries of all-electric vehicles grow by almost 24 percent in 2022

Volkswagen continues to make rapid progress with the transformation to e-mobility: at around 330,000 units, worldwide deliveries of all-electric vehicles (Battery Electric Vehicles - BEVs) grew 23.6 percent year-on-year. Overall, Volkswagen brand deliveries of all drive types were slightly down on the previous year due to the strained supply situation: 4.56 million vehicles (-6.8 percent) were delivered to customers worldwide in 2022. The order backlog remains very high. In Europe, around 640,000 customers have placed orders for Volkswagen models across all drive types (+18 percent).

Imelda Labbé, Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales said: “We achieved a solid sales result in 2022 despite persistent supply bottlenecks. The pronounced growth in BEV models confirms that with our attractive product portfolio, we are on the right track to becoming the most desirable brand for sustainable mobility.” The roadmap is clear: with the ACCELERATE strategy, Volkswagen is stepping up the pace of its electric campaign with ten new electric models by 2026. Volkswagen already has the broadest portfolio of electric models. By 2026, the brand will have the right product in every segment, from the entry-level e-car with a target price of under €25,000 to the new flagship ID.7.

Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. models are meeting with a positive response on global automotive markets. With around 170,000 units delivered to customers in 2022, the ID.4 is the Volkswagen Group’s top electric world car. In China, the company’s largest sales market, Volkswagen more than doubled deliveries of the all-electric models from the ID. family: 143,100 ID.3, ID.4 and ID.6 were handed over to customers there in 2022 (+102.9 percent). There was also a major boost in sales in North America: in total, the company delivered 22,700 ID.4 (+27.7 percent) in the region. With deliveries of around 8,900 units, the ID.4 was the bestselling electric car in Sweden. That makes an ID. model the top-selling BEV car in Sweden for the third year in a row (2020: ID.3; 2021: ID.4).

Volkswagen has already reached a first milestone in its electric mobility campaign. Since the first ID.3 was handed over to a customer in September 2020, Volkswagen has delivered more than 580,000 models from the ID. family worldwide. The technical basis for the ID. models is the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). Last week, Volkswagen showcased the latest addition to the ID. family – a specially camouflaged ID.7 – at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. With the sedan, Volkswagen is expanding its electric portfolio into the upper middle class high-volume segment. Despite a challenging market environment, Volkswagen delivered around 4.56 million vehicles across all drive types to customers in 2022 (-6.8 percent).

SUVs are the fastest-growing market segment. Volkswagen was quick to systematically adapt its portfolio to this trend. The share of SUVs in total deliveries has risen to 45 percent (+4 percent). In the USA, over 80 percent of Volkswagen’s deliveries are in the SUV segment. In Europe, the T-Roc is the best-selling vehicle in the SUV market.

Unicars is driving Cyprus to e-mobility

Having created the largest private network of electric car chargers, consisting of 27 chargers, geographically covering the area from Poli Chrysochous to Ayia Napa and by launching the first interactive digital map with all the charging points of its network in Cyprus, Unicars makes the transition to electric mobility even smoother and more approachable for everyone!

Unicars continues to lead the technological developments by consistently implementing its strategy for electrification. In addition to the continuous training of its staff, the continuous upgrading of its facilities and the wide range of electric and plug-in hybrid cars, it has invested in the development of multiple charging points throughout Cyprus and is launching the first mobile application with Unicars charging points.

Electric mobility is the present but also the future of the automotive industry. Its further promotion goes through the actions that must be done in the infrastructures. For this purpose, Unicars has long undertaken to implement an ambitious plan by creating an extensive network of electric car chargers.

At this moment, there is a total of 27 charging points geographically covering Cyprus, from Poli Chrysochous to Ayia Napa, providing the possibility to all electric car owners, regardless of brand, to charge in central and publicly accessible points. The network will continue to expand, and the next 4 charging points are expected to be added in Limassol District by the end of February.

In addition, electric car drivers enjoy comprehensive services, using the first interactive digital map with all the available charging points provided by Unicars. At https://www.unicars.com/gr/chargermap.php, visitors can locate the charging points, the type of the charger, calculate the distance, and choose to be informed about the direction to the point.

Unicars will continue to offer unique ‘electrifying’ experiences to its customers by driving their own unique stories with great success!

CUPRA further strengthens its commitment to electric motorsport as it joins ABT to compete in Formula E

CUPRA has spent the past four years reinventing motorsport and going out to win, developing the e-Racer – the world’s first 100% electric touring car – and recording achievements in competitions like the FIA ETCR series and Extreme E. CUPRA is a brand with racing in its DNA, with big ambitions for sustainable racing.

A drift along the famous Eiffel Tower, a spectacular jump from the parking deck of a neighboring hotel, or donuts on the legendary strip in front of spectating Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen: Ken Block, the Audi S1 Hoonitron, and other models from Audi Tradition’s collection of treasures made a splash during the night-time film shoot in Las Vegas. The US star in the Audi S1 e-tron quattro Hoonitron electrified the gambler’s paradise in Nevada’s desert for several days. Now Ken Block has released the cinematic product.

Now CUPRA – which has the ambition to become a fully electrified brand by 2030 – is ready for the next stage of its development and will join ABT to compete in Formula E, the world’s leading electric racing competition, for the 2023 season. It’s a natural step for CUPRA as it strives to transform the racing world and prove that electrification and performance are a perfect match.

ABB FIA Formula E – the world’s first all-electric FIA World Championship and the only sport that has been net-zero certified since its inception – and CUPRA share the same DNA, and both reach a diverse audience that shares a common attitude. It’s a group made up of technology and innovation enthusiasts that merge the physical and digital worlds. Like CUPRA, Formula E is present in the metaverse with an official blockchain racing game, and both brands reach individuals that value sustainability and are passionate about racing and performance.

With team drivers Robin Frijns (Netherlands) and Nico Müller (Switzerland) signed up for 2023, the ABT CUPRA Formula E team’s participation in the “KönigKlasse” of all electric performance racing platforms will have a huge impact on the brand thanks to the global visibility technical innovation capabilities that Formula E provides. Both ABT and CUPRA will reinforce their relationship as main partners in the team and Mahindra Racing will supply the powertrain technology.

CUPRA already partners with ABT for Extreme E, and the brands are both electric racing pioneers. ABT has seen great success in Formula E with its own team, and CUPRA began its electric motorsport journey by developing the e-Racer, the world’s first all-electric touring car. Their ongoing partnership is proof of CUPRA and ABT’s shared vision of reinventing the world of motorsport through electrification.

Creating the e-Racer led CUPRA to join The FIA ETCR World Cup– the world’s first all-electric touring car championship – where the team claimed the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’-Championship double in both 2021 and 2022. In 2022, CUPRA EKS’ drivers made up all the top-three places in the season’s final standings. The CUPRA e-Racer was by far the fastest and most reliable car in the competition for the second year in a row.

Participating in Extreme E – the global electric-SUV off-road competition that highlights natural environments under threat from climate change – complements the way that CUPRA is moving towards an electrified range by the end of this decade and the brand shares the competition’s belief in the importance of highlighting the issues caused by climate change. Back in 2018, CUPRA’s ambition was to reinvent racing. Thanks to a few believers with big dreams, the brand has continued to challenge racing performance and pioneer new formats of the sport, creating new emotions and experiences.

Ken Block and the Audi S1 Hoonitron electrify Las Vegas

When US drift artist Ken Block releases his long-awaited Electrikhana video, the Audi S1 Hoonitron will be featured as one of the principal performers: Developed and assembled at Audi Sport in Neckarsulm, the all-electric prototype that was styled by Audi Design taking cues from an Audi icon thrills viewers. The link to the film: YouTube.com/thehoonigans

“With the S1 Hoonitron we broke entirely new ground at Audi,” says Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board for Technical Development at AUDI AG. “Developing a fully electric prototype for the unique requirements of our partner Ken Block was a big and exciting challenge to which the whole team rose with flying colors. It is great to see how ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ is presented in an all-new environment.”

The Audi S1 Hoonitron has two electric motors, all-wheel drive, power galore, a carbon fiber chassis, and fully complies with the safety standards of the FIA, motorsport’s governing body. Audi Sport developed it as a one-of-a-kind car exclusively for Ken Block. Its body shell, for which Audi Design led by Marc Lichte is responsible, immediately evokes memories of the legendary Audi Sport quattro S1 with which the four rings charged to the top in the famous Pikes Peak hill-climb race. Ken Block and his team engaged in close exchange with the Audi departments during the development of the vehicle.

Alongside the S1 Hoonitron, the Electrikhana film features brief guest appearances by other models from Audi Tradition, such as the Audi 90 IMSA GTO (1989), the Audi 200 Trans Am (1988), the Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes Peak (1987), the Audi quattro Gruppe B A2 (1984) as well as the Audi R8 LMP and Audi R18 e-tron quattro from Le Mans. Apropos Le Mans: Tom Kristensen, the record winner of the iconic endurance race with nine triumphs under his belt, makes a brief guest appearance at a red traffic light as well.

SEAT tops one million SUV sales

The SUV sensation is continuing full steam ahead. Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are taking up a larger share of the market year after year. In 2021 they accounted for 46% of car registrations in Europe, 5 percentage points more than the previous year. A clear example of this growth evolution is SEAT’s SUV range. In 2022 it topped the one million mark in terms of sales of its three models just six years after the launch of its first one. Last year, the Arona, Ateca and Tarraco already accounted for 49% of the brand’s global sales, with 192,100 units. Design, versatility and sporty driving play an essential role amongst the reasons for their popularity.

The 1 millionth SUV was none other than a SEAT Arona, always at the forefront. Since its launch in 2017, SEAT’s first urban SUV has become the brand’s most popular car, with 481,585 units sold globally. A best-seller in Spain in 2021, this is the first time an SUV has led the market in the country. It has sold close to 98,000 units in Spain since its debut. It stands out for its functional and practical design, youthful and customisable image, value for money, great dynamic performance and technological interior, which make it a comfortable, connected and very safe car. The SEAT Arona is produced at the Martorell factory.

It is followed by the robust SEAT Ateca, the first SUV in the brand’s history. The compact SUV has now sold 435,443 units. Its elegant lines and distinctly sporty character give it an unmistakable identity, emphasised by its 4Drive all-wheel drive version, one of the most efficient on the market. It has a strong following in Germany, where sales already total more than 108,000 units thanks to its agile, stable and comfortable handling in any situation, which perfectly matches its off-road nature.

Alongside it stands the SEAT Tarraco. Launched in 2018, 88,820 units of this SUV have been sold globally so far. It was the first model to be named by popular vote in which more than 140,000 people participated. Its trend-setting design enhances its presence. However, what makes it stand out most is its spaciousness, with an ergonomic interior seating up to seven and a boot capacity of up to 1,775 litres with all the rows of seats folded down. In addition, its elevated position gives it practicality without compromising its sporty handling with great cornering precision. As with the Ateca, its biggest market is Germany, where 29,000 units have been sold.

New SEAT Ibiza and new SEAT Arona achieve 5-star in the stricter Euro NCAP safety rating

The new SEAT Ibiza and the new SEAT Arona maintain their flawless 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, five years after they first achieved the impressive target. The recognition is even more impressive given how challenging Euro NCAP has made the testing process in recent years. The tests have become more rigorous and now include the introduction of a moving barrier to moving car frontal crash test, replacing the moderate offset-deformable barrier test. This helps Euro NCAP evaluate the protection of occupants inside the car, and how the cars’ front-end structurers contribute too. Add to this updated side impacts to include adjustments to the near-side barrier test speed and mass and far-side impact protection, focusing on driver protection and the potential interaction between driver and front seat passenger.

SEAT succeeded in the Euro NCAP safety assessment, even with more rigorous testing, by taking an evolutionary approach to the new SEAT Ibiza and Arona’s passive and active technologies.

In addition to the existing equipment already found on the two vehicles both were updated to include modifications to the exterior body: re-designed front-end structure was adapted for the new Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier head-on crash, as well as structural reinforcements for side impact protection. The vehicles’ restraint systems were also updated to integrate front seat belts with a dual belt pretensioner, and in the rear a seat belt reminder is also included. Add to this a new passenger airbag and the interior has become even safer. Safety tests also reply on an impressive range of active safety technologies to help mitigate and in some cases prevent incidents occurring in the first place. Both the new SEAT Ibiza and Arona now integrate new camera technology as standard as well as Lane Assist technology. In addition, the onboard radar software has been optimised to include Pedestrian and Bicycle Recognition, helping protect vulnerable road users.

The new SEAT Ibiza scored high in each area tested: Adult Occupant 83%, Child Occupant 82%, Vulnerable Road User 66% and Safety Assist 70%. The new SEAT Arona also achieved high scores: Adult Occupant 83%, Child Occupant 83%, Vulnerable Road User 65% and Safety Assist 70%. SEAT is determined to continue to develop vehicles that excel during Euro NCAP tests, no matter how strict they become. The new SEAT Ibiza and Arona maintaining their 5-star awards and joining the the rest of the SEAT Range in doing so, is testament to the brands dedication to delivering the safest vehicles possible.

With 2.5 liters of displacement and 294 kW (400 PS), it now boasts some 17% more power than in the previous generation of the RS Q3, which had augmented its performance to 250 kW (340 PS) in 2015. Volkswagen begins construction of battery cell factory

Volkswagen is consistently continuing its e-mobility strategy: to kick off its battery offensive, the Group broke the ground for its first cell factory in Salzgitter today in the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Production will start in 2025. With immediate effect, responsibility for global battery business is to be held by the newly created company “PowerCo”. In addition to cell production, the new company will be responsible for activities along the entire battery value chain. Up to 2030, PowerCo is to invest more than €20 billion together with partners in the development of the business area, to generate annual sales in excess of €20 billion and to employ up to 20,000 people in Europe alone.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said with regard to the groundbreaking ceremony: “Today is a good day for the automotive industry in Germany and Europe. Volkswagen is showing how the future of sustainable, climate-compatible mobility could look. Together, we are laying the foundation for shaping this future to a significant extent in Salzgitter.“

Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen AG, said: “Today we are not only laying a foundation stone but also marking a strategic milestone. The battery cell business is one of the cornerstones of our NEW AUTO strategy which will make Volkswagen a leading provider of the sustainable, software-driven mobility of tomorrow. Establishing our own cell factory is a megaproject in technical and economic terms. It shows that we are bringing the leading-edge technology of the future to Germany!”

The Volkswagen Group is bundling its global battery activities in the European company (SE) PowerCo. Following Salzgitter, the next cell factory is to be established at Valencia. Sites are currently being identified for three further cell factories in Europe. In addition to Europe, PowerCo is also already exploring the possibility of further gigafactories in North America.

By 2030, the Volkswagen Group intends to operate six cell factories with a total volume of 240 GWh throughout Europe together with partners. The new unified cell harnesses synergy effects and will reduce battery costs by up to 50 percent. The prototypes produced to date have demonstrated highly promising performance with respect to range, charging times and safety – essential prerequisites for a future industrial standard.

The CUPRA Born, the brand’s first 100% electric model, which delivers an emotional design and instantaneous performance, continued the company’s great results during Euro NCAP’s safety testing, achieving a 5-star safety rating.

It’s a significant result for the CUPRA Born, and it now joins the CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon as five-star cars, highlighting once again that the brand is committed to delivering vehicles that mix contemporary performance and maximum safety. But this time in a 100% electric model.

“CUPRA is committed not only to bring emotions to the electric world, but also the highest safety standards to the market,” said Dr. Werner Tietz, Executive Vice-President for Research and Development at CUPRA. “We’ve proven this before with the CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon, and now we’ve continued our commitment to safety with the CUPRA Born’s 5-star rating.”

Systems includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition, Travel Assist, Light Assist and Pre-Crash Assist. Add to these the integration of seven airbags, including a standard front-central airbag, Front Assist with vehicle, pedestrian & cyclist detection, Emergency Steering Assist and Junction Assist, Lane Assist and Emergency e-Call and the CUPRA Born delivers one of the safest vehicles available, even when faced with the latest and stricter testing methods used by Euro NCAP. In addition to detecting vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, the Front Assist also includes Emergency Steering Assist and Junction Assist. During a Front Assist intervention, after the driver’s initial steering input to avoid an object, the Emergency Steering Assist makes targeted steering and braking interventions to help find an optimised evading trajectory.

The CUPRA Born’s scores in each area tested highlighted how the breadth of systems helped it achieve its final rating: Adult Occupant 93%, Child Occupant 89%, Vulnerable Road User 73% and Safety Assist 80%. Since Euro NCAP re-evaluated its testing procedures, CUPRA has worked hard to make sure its vehicles continue to score highly, and the fact the CUPRA Born joins the CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon in its 5-star rating bears testament to the brands dedication to delivering the safest vehicles possible.

“The coming years will be both exciting and challenging for SEAT/CUPRA,” said Thomas Schäfer. “The company drives forward key strategic projects for the entire Volkswagen Group: the growth of business, as well as the electrification of Spain, with the design, development and production of the urban electric vehicle models for our Volume brands. Audi adds Apple Music to a wide range of its models

Audi is integrating Apple Music, a premium music streaming subscription service, directly into select models. Adding Apple Music into the infotainment system gives users the ability to access their subscription directly and intuitively from the Multi-Media Interface (MMI) screen using in-car internet data. This seamless integration allows Apple Music subscribers to find their favorite music and discover even more new music.  The new Apple Music integration allows customers to access their personal Apple Music account directly from the Audi infotainment system, with no bluetooth or USB required. After linking an active subscription to the vehicle, Apple Music subscribers can access Apple Music’s full catalog of 90 million songs, and tens of thousands of playlists, including hundreds of new mood and activity playlists, personalized mixes, and genre stations – all ad-free.

“Integrating Apple Music into the Audio infotainment system marks the next step in the collaboration between Audi and Apple,” said Christiane Zorn, Head of Product Marketing at Audi. “For our customers, it means that we are offering them direct access to their own personalized listening experience. This is our understanding of a premium digital in-car experience. At Audi we are systematically driving the digitalization of the vehicle and we are convinced that the interior is increasingly developing into a third living space”. The Apple Music integration will be included in nearly all Audi vehicles in Europe, North America and Japan starting with the 2022 model year. The integration will be conveniently rolled out to vehicles already on the road via an automatic over-the-air update.

To activate Apple Music, customers simply need to open the app in their Audi’s infotainment system and follow the on-screen instructions to log in with the Apple ID they use for Apple Music. To finish the setup process, they simply need to enter a verification code that is sent to their phone. For Audi owners in Europe, cellular data streaming costs incurred are conveniently billed via a data package available from Cubic-Telekom. The first three gigabytes are free of charge. Audi vehicles also come with Apple CarPlay support. Drivers can connect their iPhone wirelessly (or via USB) and get directions optimized for traffic, make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music simply by tapping the touchscreen display or using Siri voice control. Apple Music turns an Audi into a concert hall on wheels

Thanks to the integration of Apple Music, the vehicle not only becomes a hub for streaming entertainment, but also a concert hall on wheels thanks to its sophisticated audio architecture ‒ and the passengers feel like they’re sitting right in the middle of it all. This is because Audi creates a tailor-made acoustic experience for each model, and digital signal processing delivers a well-balanced sound. For example, the signals from the speakers can be controlled with an individual time offset and thus reach the listener simultaneously. Sound design goes even further to create the ultimate acoustic experience. This is where the Audi sound developers adjust the frequency response to create the typical, but still subjective, Audi sound. Audi has been working with Bang & Olufsen in this context for many years, which has resulted in the development of some exceptional sound systems, such as the B&O Premium Sound System with 3D sound in the Audi e-tron GT*. Here, 16 speakers including 3D sound speakers, a center speaker, and a subwoofer deliver impressive audio.

ETM Awards 2022: MAN Truck & Bus wins again in the Truck, Bus, Van categories

Around 6,000 readers of the commercial vehicle publications of ETM-Verlag: trans aktuell, lastauto omnibus and FERNFAHRER voted for the best commercial vehicles and the best brands in the commercial vehicle sector. The entire election was accompanied by the testing company DEKRA. In the readers' poll for "Best Truck", "Best Van" and "Best Bus", more than 216 commercial vehicle series from 16 categories - from vans to heavy trucks or coaches - were up for election. MAN Truck & Bus took home a total of four awards at the awards ceremony held as part of the Future Congress for Commercial Vehicles 2022 on 1 June in Berlin.

"The ETM (EuroTransportMedia) Award plays a very important role for the MAN Sales & Customer Solutions Team. Every year the best commercial vehicles and brands are honoured here by the votes of the readers of the magazines trans aktuell, lastauto omnibus and FERNFAHRER. To regularly win over more than 200 competitors in the categories Best Van, Best Truck and Best Bus fills us with great pride and motivates us to continue to perform at our best in the future," explains Friedrich Baumann, MAN Executive Board member responsible for Sales & Customer Solutions. And Christoph Huber, Chairman of the Executive Board, MAN Truck & Bus Deutschland GmbH, adds: "Our products were once again able to impress in the Truck, Bus and Van categories this year. We are extremely pleased that both the all-electric MAN eTGE and the MAN Lion's Coach coach took first place in the ETM Awards for the fourth time in a row."

Whether it's better driving performance, more comfort, maximum transport capacity, top quality and durability, exemplary safety and environmental compatibility or digital networking: the MAN TGS meets all expectations and is a versatile truck perfectly tailored to industry use. With its powerful drive, unrivalled payload and unique ergonomics, it sets standards. The MAN TGS also presents itself with practice-oriented equipment: Congestion situations can be managed fatigue-free with the Congestion Assistant and the Stop&Go function of the distance-controlled cruise control ACC. The MAN TGS sets new standards with its electrical/electronic architecture and innovative digital services.

The innovative digital mirror replacement system MAN OptiView brings more safety to the road. It supports the driver during critical driving manoeuvres such as manoeuvring, turning and changing lanes by providing extended views and an optimum overview of the traffic situation. MAN OptiView does much more than conventional mirror systems. In addition to the legally prescribed fields of vision, the digital mirror replacement system shows views specially adapted for different driving situations (e.g. turning, manoeuvring, motorway driving). The mode of operation and display concept of the MAN OptiView are thus optimally tailored to the needs of natural human perception and enable the driver to quickly visually grasp traffic events and the vehicle environment, to reliably assess them and thus to cope with them safely.

EasyControl was developed to avoid unnecessary entry and exit into the cab: There are four control panels in the driver's door that can be conveniently reached from the outside. Depending on the version, they are preassigned with the most important functions or some can be individually assigned.

The winner in the intercity bus category was the MAN Lion's Intercity LE, which was introduced last year. Thanks to its modularity, the new MAN Lion's Intercity LE is flexible and impresses with its minimal "Total Cost of Ownership". Six buses can be configured from a basic model, which are perfectly adapted to city traffic or intercity use with state-of-the-art technology and versatile equipment. The drive train with D15 engine, familiar from the predecessor model MAN Lion's Intercity, can be configured in three power levels from 280 to 360 hp with two selectable automatic transmissions. With the launch of the city-oriented version, the MAN EfficientHybrid system will also be available for all MAN Lion's Intercity LE.

The MAN eTGE also won in the electric transporter category for the fourth time in a row. The fully electrically powered version of the MAN Transporter has already been available for purchase since 2018 and is also available with a box body as well as with a flatbed or three-way tipper as well as an estate.

The new ŠKODA FABIA receives Red Dot Award for exceptional product design

Hat-trick for the ŠKODA FABIA: the Czech carmaker’s popular entry-level model has won the renowned Red Dot Award for outstanding product design for the third time after receiving it in 2008 and 2015. This puts the fourth-generation FABIA on a par with the brand’s iconic OCTAVIA. ŠKODA vehicles have now won 17 awards in the product design category of the renowned design competition. The international jury was impressed by the FABIA’s striking design, spaciousness and balanced package overall. Offering the most space in its segment, the fourth - generation ŠKODA FABIA also scores points for its emotive design and athletic proportions. The angular front headlights, which come with LED technology as standard, extend to the ŠKODA grille. Just like the LED rear lights, they feature crystalline structures inspired by Bohemian glass art. Another tribute to the FABIA’s country of origin appears on the front doors, with bodylines stylizing the characteristic triangle of the Czech flag.

In their summary, the expert jury of the Red Dot Award emphasized: “The FABIA conveys a sporty yet likeable impression through its exterior design. The interior has a surprisingly generous feeling of spaciousness.” The symmetrically designed instrument panel along with the free-standing central display and horizontal decorative trim emphasise the width of the interior and enhance the FABIA’s ample space. The Red Dot Award is one of the world’s best-known and most prestigious design competitions. 48 jury members from 23 nations, including professors, designers, journalists and consultants, independently evaluated each entry based on numerous criteria, including standard of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, durability and environmental friendliness. In 2022, the Red Dot, which is an internationally recognized seal of quality product design, will be presented for the 67th time. The official award ceremony will be held at the Red Dot Gala on 20 June 2022 in Essen/Germany.

The fourth-generation FABIA has secured this coveted seal of quality for ŠKODA for the 17th time. The Czech automaker’s first Red Dot Award was received for the OCTAVIA COMBI II in 2006. Audi e-tron GT wins at the 2022 World Car Awards

The Audi e-tron GT quattro is a big winner at this year’s World Car Awards, which have been presented for the 18th time in New York. Nominated in the categories World Electric Vehicle of the Year, World Performance Car, and World Car Design of the Year, the e-tron GT quattro took home the title of World Performance Car at the world’s biggest and most prestigious new car awards ceremony, dubbed the “Oscars of the automotive world.” More than 100 auto journalists from around the world thoroughly tested the cars that qualified and then voted on them for the 2022 honors.

“We’re happy that the fully electric Audi e-tron GT quattro was a finalist in three categories only a year after its world premiere,” said Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development, after the awards program. "The fact that the Audi e-tron GT quattro takes the title of "World Performance Car" and thus this award goes to Audi for the fifth time makes us particularly proud, of course. The Audi e-tron GT quattro proves that electric mobility can be sustainable, dynamic, and fascinating all at once. That’s why it is an important part of our commitment to electric mobility.” As of 2026, Audi will only be launching new models with electric drive systems onto the global market. Starting in 2025, all production at Audi locations will be carbon neutral. That is already happening now in Brussels, Győr, and the Böllinger Höfe, where the Audi e-tron GT quattro is produced.

The performance that earned the Audi e-tron GT quattro its World Performance Car award is ensured, to a great extent, by a sophisticated thermal management system. In the Audi e-tron GT quattro, that system consists of four thermal circuits. That means that the battery and the components of the drive system each stay at their ideal temperature, resulting in performance characteristics that can be reproduced at any time. Thanks to intelligent thermal management, anyone who uses the e-tron route planner in the e-tron GT quattro will put the battery in an ideal temperature range for charging, depending on the exterior temperature, even while the car is driving – which is useful for fast charging with up to 270 kW.

This year's victory brings the brand with the four rings to eleven first places at the World Car Awards. That makes Audi the most successful manufacturer in the history of that award.

Volkswagen introduces Over-the-Air Updates for all ID. models

Volkswagen is taking the next big step towards becoming a software-oriented mobility provider with its ACCELERATE strategy. Effective immediately, all ID. models will receive regular software updates via mobile data transfer. The updates had previously only been available as part of a test phase for customers who had registered with the “ID. First Movers Club”. The “ID. Software 2.3” offers new functions and optimises existing ones. Networking the entire ID. fleet will allow Volkswagen to lay the foundation for new, customer-oriented business models. Thus far, Volkswagen remains the only high-volume manufacturer to provide this technology for its customers.

In future, the company plans to provide its customers with free software around every twelve weeks to keep the vehicles up to date and improve the customer experience. Volkswagen is also aiming to generate increased revenue during the usage phase with new, data-based business models – for services and functions that the customer can now order as required, whenever these are needed. For example, this could be Travel Assist or improved battery performance for long journeys, or even automated driving at a later point in time. Volkswagen sees the potential to generate hundreds of millions in additional revenue over the next few years.

The Over-the-Air Updates are being developed in close collaboration with CARIAD, the Volkswagen Group's software company. “The new updates are a central functionality of the digital, connected car. They will quickly become normal for our customers, in the same way as they have for their smartphones,” says Thomas Ulbrich, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development. “Software development is iterative and fast. We work in short cycles, like a tech company, and provide updates to our customers at correspondingly short intervals.”

Volkswagen also wants to stay in touch with its customers after selling or leasing the car, to provide digital services. “Vehicles that always have the latest software on board can provide an excellent digital customer experience and are therefore of the utmost importance for our future success,” adds Ulbrich. “Thanks to regular updates, the car will not just remain up-to-date – it will become even better.”

Some of the new functions affect the ID. Light, a light strip at the bottom of the windscreen. It now gives the driver information that can provide intuitive support for energy-saving driving, and when driving with the automatic distance control system “Active Cruise Control” (ACC). Image processing has also been improved for the multifunction camera, allowing it to recognise motorcycles and other road users even more swiftly. The same applies when driving in the dark. If installed, dynamic main beam control allows even more precise headlight regulation. The graphics on the central infotainment display become calmer and clearer, with more intuitive operation – showing how Volkswagen reacts to feedback from the first ID. customers.

The digital customer experience is becoming a focal point for all development steps for products and services across the entire vehicle lifecycle. As part of the ACCELERATE strategy, Over-the-Air Updates lay the foundation for new business models and customer-centric product optimisation.

ŠKODA ENYAQ iV and ŠKODA FABIA declared “Best-in-class Cars of 2021” in Euro NCAP test

The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has declared the all-electric ŠKODA ENYAQ iV SUV and the fourth-generation ŠKODA FABIA best-in-class for the 2021 test year. This means the two models were the safest of all vehicles tested in their respective classes in 2021. The ENYAQ iV is the safest SUV to have been submitted to the crash safety reference test to date, scoring 86 per cent of the total possible points. The new FABIA meanwhile, at 78 per cent, achieved the best score of all the compact cars tested in 2021. ŠKODA is the only manufacturer to be represented with two vehicles in the line-up of “Best-in-class Cars of 2021”.

All 14 new ŠKODA models launched since 2008 have received the maximum five-star rating in the Euro NCAP test. Euro NCAP regularly compiles a list of the vehicles that have achieved the top result in their class in the crash safety reference tests performed during the previous year. For 2021, these “Best-in-class Cars” include two ŠKODA models: the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV in the SUV class and the ŠKODA FABIA in the compact car class. This makes ŠKODA the only manufacturer to have two class winners in 2021. The ENYAQ iV and the FABIA are the thirteenth and fourteenth new ŠKODA models in direct succession to have received the top rating of five stars since 2008. In 2014, the third-generation FABIA had also been declared best in its class.

As the Euro NCAP test requirements become tougher each year, the best-in-class comparison is made only within the years 2020 and 2021 so that all vehicles are assessed against the same standards. The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV received the maximum rating of five stars and an overall score of 86 per cent of all possible points in the 2021 Euro NCAP test. The first ŠKODA vehicle to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric car platform achieved outstanding results in the comprehensive crash and safety tests of the European New Car Assessment Programme, particularly in terms of occupant protection. With 94 per cent of available points for Adult Occupant Protection and 89 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, the ŠKODA SUV set a new record in the Euro NCAP tests, which were once again made more stringent, compared to 2020. Since then this percentage has only been exceeded once, by a premium class vehicle. In its Euro NCAP test, the new ŠKODA FABIA benefited from a further increase in safety due to the switch to the Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 Modular Transverse Matrix, which now enables the use of seven modern assistance systems, among other improvements.

The successful model’s fourth generation scored 78 per cent of the maximum available points and, like the ENYAQ iV, excelled particularly in the area of occupant protection, with 85 per cent of the possible points for Adult Occupant Protection and 81 per cent of the maximum points for Child Occupant Protection. The all-electric Škoda Enyaq iV and the fourth-generation Skoda Fabia can be found at Unicars showrooms.

The new Volkswagen Taigo in Unicars showrooms

Volkswagen Taigo, the new compact crossover coupé, is now available in Unicars showrooms. This is the company’s first SUV coupé in the compact SUV category with modern and elegant design, distinctive style and many personalisation elements ideal for everyday use.

Taigo is based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB) platform and it has an overall length of 4,270 mm, a width of 1,757 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,566 mm. These figures offer exceptional room for passengers and luggage and make it one of the most comfortable in its class. The roofline slopes at the rear, but the coupé styling doesn’t restrict headroom for the passengers. The luggage compartment offers a capacity of almost 440 litres, a figure which is significantly increased by folding down the rear seats. Stand-out exterior design features are the full LED headlights, flared wheel arches and the muscular radiator grille with wide air vents that further emphasise the crossover character of the vehicle.

The car retains strong VW identity in terms of interior fittings, with elements derived from larger Volkswagen models. This way, Taigo can provide both high quality construction and a host of technological elements for comfort and safety. The 8-inch touch screen in the centre of the dashboard is from the latest generation Infotainment system MIB3 (optional 9.2-inch), the 8-inch colour customisable digital driver display (optional 10.25-inch), the App-Connect Wireless and the IQ Matrix smart LED headlights (depending on the equipment level) that illuminate different points of the road ahead depending on the conditions.

In terms of driver assistance systems, the Taigo has the most modern for the class, offering semi-autonomous driving level 2.5 from the standard equipment level, thanks to the intelligent IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist system. Among the basic equipment assistance systems are the Front Assist environment monitoring system, including the City Emergency Braking function and Lane Assist.

Cypriot buyers can choose between two petrol engines with three different power outputs. Starting with the one-litre three-cylinder with 95 or 110 PS (70 or 81 kW), while the third option is the 1.5 litre four-cylinder with 150 PS (110 kW). Depending on the version, both engines of the Taigo can be equipped with either a 5 or 6-speed manual gearbox or the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG).

Top marks in the Euro NCAP test: five stars for the ID.5, Polo and Taigo

Hat-trick in the renowned Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) safety test: the new Volkswagen models ID.5, Polo and Taigo have each achieved the highest score possible with five out of five stars. The testers gave the all-electric SUV coupé and the two new small cars with combustion engines excellent ratings in all four tested criteria: the protection of adult occupants, children and vulnerable road users and standard assist systems.

The three Volkswagen models achieved very good scores above all in the category “Occupant protection for adults”. Here, the all-electric ID.5 received 93 percent of the total possible points, while the Polo and Taigo even achieved a score of 94 percent. The assessment is based on factors including frontal impact, lateral impact and whiplash tests. The outstanding resultfor the ID.5 was determined based on the crash tests and an assessment of the measures for the fastest possible rescue and recovery. A further important safety feature is the centre airbag for the front seats, which is installed in all three tested Volkswagen models. In the event of a side collision, this can help to prevent or at least reduce possible head contact between the persons in the first seat row. The ID.5 achieved a result of 89 percent in the category “Protection of children”. This rating is based on three important aspects: in addition to the protection provided by child restraint systems in the event of a frontal or lateral impact, the focus here is also on the options for safe installation of child seats of various sizes, as well as the equipment that a vehicle offers for the safe transportation of children. The Polo (80 percent) and the Taigo (84 percent) also did very well in this category.

In the “Assist systems” category, the ID.5 impressed with 85 percent of the maximum score. Taigo and Polo each achieved 70 percent in this category. As standard equipment, they all feature the Driver Alert System, the Front Assist emergency braking system with city emergency braking function and pedestrian detection, as well as the Lane Assist lane keeping assistant. With the ID.5, the visual and acoustic seat belt reminders (in the first row of seats) as well as the seat occupancy recognition (in the second row of seats) were also considered and positively evaluated in this category. In addition to occupant protection in vehicles, Euro NCAP also examines how well automatic emergency braking systems can protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists in the event of an impending collision. Euro NCAP has determined that the Front Assist system – equipped as standard in the ID.5, Taigo and Polo – is very effective at detecting these road users. The area monitoring system recognises critical distance situations by means of a radar sensor and camera and helps to shorten the stopping distance. In danger situations, the system warns the driver visually and acoustically and also by means of a braking jolt and automatic braking. In the area of protection of pedestrians and cyclists, the ID.5 achieved a result of 76 percent, followed closely by the Taigo (71 percent) and Polo (70 percent).

Five stars in a row: new trio in good company With the five-star ratings across the board for the ID.5, Polo and Taigo, Volkswagen underlines its commitment to the highest safety standards and continues its series of successes: the ID.4 and compact ID.3 recently achieved the highest ratings in the Euro NCAP in April 2021 and October 2020 respectively. In 2019, the Golf and T-Cross also received top marks.

World premiere of the new ID. Buzz

Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are giving the new ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo1 their world premiere today in Hamburg. With Europe's first all-electric bus and transporter range, Volkswagen is providing yet another solution to sustainable and CO2-free mobility. The ID. Buzz comes with the latest ID. software and sets new standards in its segment with the latest systems and functions for safety, comfort and charging.

Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Passenger Cars: “The ID. Buzz is a genuine icon for the electric era. A car, the likes of which only Volkswagen can build. In the 1950s, the Volkswagen Bulli stood for a new feeling of automotive freedom, independence and great emotion. The ID. Buzz picks up on this lifestyle and transfers it into our time: emission-free, sustainable, fully networked and now ready for the next big chapter: autonomous driving. With this car, we are bringing together the core themes of our ACCELERATE strategy in one product for the first time.”

Carsten Intra, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Brand, adds: “Both versions of the ID. Buzz are pioneering in terms of their sustainability: their manufacture and shipping has a carbon-neutral footprint. We are also using recycled synthetic materials and the interior is completely free of any real leather.” He continues: “The ID. Buzz will also be used for future autonomous mobility concepts such as ridepooling – an e-shuttle service of Group subsidiary MOIA that can be booked via an app. The electric Bulli is thus also a part of the future of inner-city transport.”

As is the case for all the models in Volkswagen Passenger Car’s ID. family, the ID. Buzz, which is built by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hannover, is also based in engineering terms on the Group’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB). The world's first scalable mass production platform for all-electric cars provides the cross-brand basis for all sorts of different models and segments. Its architecture allows for an evolutionary further development of software and technology, which not only benefits new models such as the ID. Buzz, but also models that have already been delivered, by means of over-the-air updates.

Latest generation ID. software with new assistance and charging functions. The new model line’s assistance systems perfect ease of driving and safety. Included as standard in the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo is the ‘Car2X’ local warning system, which utilises signals from other vehicles and the transport infrastructure to spot hazards in real time. Also included as standard: the ‘Front Assist’ emergency braking function and, in the MPV, the ‘Lane Assist’ lane-keeping assistant. With new software, new assistance functions are also making their way into the ID. family. Available as an option is ‘Travel Assist with swarm data’, which facilitates partially automated driving across the entire speed range and, for the first time, assisted lane-changing on the motorway. Also new: the ‘Memory Function’ for automated parking on a previously saved route.

Up to 170 kW charging power, Plug & Charge and bidirectional charging. The ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo are launching across Europe with a 77 kWh battery (gross energy content: 82 kWh). It provides current to a 150 kW electric motor, which – as the flat engine once did in the T1 – drives the rear axle. The position of the battery, integrated deep down in the sandwich floor, and the lightweight electric drive system result in a good distribution of weight and a low vehicle centre of gravity. Both factors optimise the handling and agility. The lithium ion battery can be charged from wall boxes or public charging stations using 11 kW alternating current (AC). Via a CCS plug connector at a DC rapid-charging station (direct current) the charging power increases to as much as 170 kW. When charged in this way, the battery charge level rises from 5 to 80% in about 30 minutes. Using the latest ID. software, the model line will also offer the ‘Plug & Charge’ function in the future. Via this function, the ID. Buzz authenticates itself at compatible DC rapid-charging stations via the charging connector using the ISO 15118 standard. It also exchanges all necessary data with the charging station in this way – an added convenience. Bidirectional charging enables the ID. Buzz to feed unneeded energy from the battery into the customer's home network (Vehicle-to-Home). The power transfer and communication take place via a special DC bi-directional wall box.

Volkswagen doubles deliveries of all-electric vehicles in 2021

Volkswagen is continuing to press ahead with the transition to e-mobility despite the limited supply of semiconductors. Last year, the company delivered more electric vehicles worldwide than ever before, handing over more than 369,000 electric cars (+73 percent versus 2020), including approximately 106,000 PHEVs (+33 percent) and 263,000 all-electric vehicles (+97 percent) to customers. Volkswagen thus doubled its BEV deliveries year-on-year. “In a very short time, we have reached a top position for all-electric vehicles in Europe. With our ACCELERATE strategy and the expansion of the model portfolio, we will continue to increase the pace of the e-mobility offensive. Before the end of this year, the ID. BUZZ will represent yet another emotional model in our ID. family,” said Brandstätter.

Volkswagen delivered around 4.897 million vehicles across all drive systems to customers around the world. The proportion of purely battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles nearly doubled to 7.5 percent of total deliveries (2020: 4 percent). In Europa, these vehicles now account for 19.3 percent of Volkswagen’s deliveries (2020: 12.6 percent). Volkswagen recorded a significant increase in deliveries of electric vehicles particularly in the United States, China and Germany. In the company’s home market, one in four Volkswagen vehicles was a plug-in vehicle. Volkswagen’s most popular BEV model worldwide is the ID.4, which lived up to its name as a world car in its first year on the market. The ID.4 was the most frequently delivered of the 263,000 BEVs with 119,650 units sold, followed by the ID.3 (around 76,000). In Europe, the ID.4 topped the BEV charts in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Ireland.

ID.5 in series production: Volkswagen successfully transforms Zwickau site into an electric vehicle production plant

Volkswagen is driving forward the shift to electric vehicle manufacturing with its ACCELERATE strategy. Today’s official start of production of the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX2 marks the completion of Volkswagen’s successful transformation of its Zwickau plant into a dedicated electric vehicle production facility. The long-established site in western Saxony is the first large-scale facility of any volume manufacturer worldwide to switch over all production from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. Six models from the Volkswagen, Audi and CUPRA brands will now be manufactured in Zwickau based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The plants in Emden (ID.4), Hanover (ID. Buzz) and Chattanooga (USA, ID.4) will be added to the electric vehicle production network this year. The Volkswagen brand has thus laid the foundations for building 1.2 million all-electric-vehicles at its sites in Europe, the USA and China in 2022 based on the MEB.

Since 2018, around 1.2 billion euros has been spent on converting the Zwickau plant from ICE vehicle production into a digital, flexible, highly efficient showcase factory for the manufacture of electric vehicles. Increasing use is being made of technology such as smart Industry 4.0 robots and driverless transportation systems that take components to the assembly line completely autonomously

The transformation to electric vehicle production in Zwickau has created enduring, future-proof jobs. The some 9,000 permanent staff working at the site received training in the new technology as part of a major training initiative. For example, all employees attended information events on electric vehicles. A total of 3,000 production workers completed the training center’s e-mobility program to prepare them for the new production requirements. By the end of 2020, the Zwickau team had put in a total of around 20,000 days of training.

Success for Audi: The e-tron GT wins the Golden Steering Wheel as the most beautiful car of the year

In Germany’s 2021 Goldenes Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) awards, the Audi e-tron GT won in the Most Beautiful Car of the Year category. The winner in this category prevailed against 69 other car models. Readers of the motoring magazine Auto Bild, its counterparts elsewhere in Europe, and the newspaper Bild am Sonntag, all submitted their votes for this prestigious competition over the summer.

The 45th Golden Steering Wheel awards took place on November 9 at the Journalistenclub in Berlin’s Axel-Springer-Haus. During the ceremonies hosted by Barbara Schöneberger, Markus Duesmann, CEO of AUDI AG, was presented with the famous sculpture for “the Most Beautiful Car of the Year”. “In its design, the e-tron GT emphasizes our claim as an automotive design brand. With its impressive performance, it offers the most emotional kind of electromobility. And with its sustainable concept, it expresses an attitude. The e-tron GT is our flagship model,” said Duesmann. The Golden Steering Wheel is not only one of the most prestigious, but also the oldest automotive competitions in Germany – awarded for the first time in 1976. Some 70 new models were competing for the 2021 Golden Steering Wheel, distributed across 12 categories. What is particular about it is that the vote for the Most Beautiful Car of the Year is a cross-category competition and readers can vote for it directly. That means it is a real audience award and therefore a heartfelt choice for an emotional car.

The e-tron GT is considered a trailblazer for Audi’s electric future, because from 2026, the company will only market new models with electric drive systems. The e-tron GT manifests emotional design, dynamic performance, and a sustainable concept – attributes that are turning this sportscar into an icon of the Audi brand even now. Apart from the Golden Steering Wheel award, this claim also substantiates several other prizes.

That is how the Gran Turismo won the 2021 Autonis award for best design innovation in the luxury class given by the journal auto motor und sport. The German Car of the Year 2022 also went to the e-tron GT in the luxury category. The e-tron GT embodies the electric flagship in the Audi portfolio and, despite the fact that it has hardly been on the market for a year, it has the potential to become a real classic.

Performance is matched by the CUPRA Born’s stimulating style in the exterior and the interior. Inside, the focus is placed strongly towards the driver as any CUPRA should be, integrating an environmentally friendly twist. A range of materials wrap the interior to create a feeling of sportiness, refinement and quality, including the standard bucket seats that use SEAQUAL® Yarn made from upcycled marine plastics.

ŠKODA most successful brand with eight wins in the ‘Auto Trophy 2021’ readers’ poll

ŠKODA wins more awards than any other brand with eight victories in the 34th ‘Auto Trophy 2021’ readers’ poll organised by the German car magazine Auto Zeitung. ŠKODA thus achieved the best result ever in the history of the readers' poll. The FABIA left the competition behind among import vehicles in the ‘City Cars/Small Cars’ category, as did the OCTAVIA in the category of imported compact models. The KAMIQ was named the best SUV up to €25,000 in the import ranking, and the SUPERB scooped trophies as the import winner in the ‘luxury class’ and for best value for money. The ENYAQ iV took first prize in the ‘E-SUV up to €50,000’ category – both as the import and overall winner. Readers also voted ŠKODA the ‘Best Import Brand’.

12,126 readers and online users of the German car magazine Auto Zeitung cast their votes: In the 34th run of the ‘Auto Trophy’, they chose their favourites out of 248 models and 138 brands across 36 categories. ŠKODA took the title of ‘Best Import Brand’ with 34.9 per cent of the vote. This was the eighth time in a row since 2014 that the Czech manufacturer has won the title in the readers’ poll.

In the ‘City Cars/Small Cars’ category, the ŠKODA FABIA secured victory among the import vehicles, receiving 29.6 per cent of the vote. The fourth generation of the popular small car is based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit MQB-A0 and offers the most space in the segment; the already generous boot volume has increased from 330 to 380 litres. The new edition also delivers improved comfort and a host of new safety and assistance features.

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA continued its winning streak with this year’s success as the best imported vehicle in the ‘Compact Models’ category: 28.9 per cent of respondents voted for it, taking it to first place. For the Czech carmaker’s bestseller, this year’s ‘Auto Trophy’ award is now the eighth trophy in a row and the 14th victory overall. At the same time, it edged out the competition in this segment, receiving 24.6 per cent of the vote to take overall victory. The new flagship of ŠKODA’s model range offers the spaciousness you would expect from a ŠKODA as well as featuring the brand’s emotive design language. In the interior, new Design Selections replace the conventional equipment lines, and thanks to a clearly laid-out new offer structure, the ideal vehicle can be configured in just a few clicks.

ŠKODA ENYAQ iV wins Golden Steering Wheel 2021 for Best Electric SUV

In this year’s edition of the Golden Steering Wheel, which recognises the best automotive innovations of the past twelve months, readers could choose their favourites from a selection of 70 models. This was the first time the editors distinguished between vehicles with combustion engines and electric cars – for example, in the categories SUV and electric SUV. A total of twelve Golden Steering Wheels were awarded.

From a total of seven entrants, the readers of Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag voted the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV into the finals along with two others in the electric SUV category. This meant that the battery-electric SUV qualified for the practical test at the Lausitzring at the beginning of October. The evaluators based their assessment of each new car on various criteria, including handling, spaciousness and all-round visibility. The jury concluded that the ENYAQ iV offers the best overall package in the electric SUV segment, outperforming the other two finalists.

The ENYAQ iV represents the Czech car manufacturer’s most significant step so far in implementing its electromobility strategy. It is the first ŠKODA production model to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB). The electric flagship of ŠKODA’s model range offers the generous space the brand is famous for and is also visually electrifying thanks to its emotive design language. In the interior, new Design Selections replace the conventional equipment lines, while a clearly laid-out new product range structure makes it possible to configure the ideal vehicle in just a few clicks. The ENYAQ iV is available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and boasts a range of over 500 kilometres1 in the WLTP cycle, making it the perfect companion on long journeys.

The first Golden Steering Wheel was awarded by Bild am Sonntag in 1976. Europe’s leading car magazine, Auto Bild, has been on board since 2009. ŠKODA is now the proud winner of seven Golden Steering Wheels. The success story began in 1999 with the first generation of the FABIA, and its successor matched this achievement in 2007. The second-generation OCTAVIA won in 2004, and the second-generation SUPERB also claimed a Golden Steering Wheel in 2008. The KAROQ received the prestigious award in 2017, followed by the KAMIQ in 2019.

The external design of the VW's new e-SUV coupé maintains and at the same time strengthens the personality of the ID family. The characteristic LED technology, with bright strips on the front and back, make the ID.5 stand out on the road. With a length of 4,599 mm (ID.5 GTX: 4,582 mm), Volkswagen's new e-SUV coupé has a luggage compartment capacity of 549 litres; while by folding down the rear seats the space is increased to 1,561 litres. The low drag coefficient of 0.26 (0.27 in ID.5 GTX) increases performance and enhances battery range. This ability is created by the built-in spoiler on the aerodynamically configured tailgate of the luggage compartment. Electrically-operated cooling vents at the front of the vehicle only open when necessary, thereby ensuring optimal air flow.

The state-of-the-art Digital Cockpit offers a new operating philosophy. The innovative, augmented reality head-up display projects additional information into the driver's field of vision.

The new generation 3.0 software enables over-the-air updates and also provides additional functions so that the ID.5 can remain updated for a long time. Innovative assistance systems like Travel Assist allow an even more relaxing driving experience, while the new optional Park Assist Plus system, with a memory function, takes care of personalised parking procedures. Also, the new software 3.0 features several improvements, including natural voice control (Hallo ID), which is programmed for learning, by giving access to online information from the Cloud. Also, the ‘We Connect’ services provide the driver with real-time traffic information, navigation updates, information about charging stations, internet radio and much more.

Four VW ID.3 electric cars for the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services from Unicars

In the context of the wider plan for the promotion of electrification and the efforts being made to protect the environment in Cyprus, the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services announced a tender for the supply and maintenance of four electric cars. The tender was awarded to Unicars at an event held at the premises of the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services. The four fully electric Volkswagen ID.3 cars, which produce zero CO₂ emissions and offer maximum safety for both the driver and the passengers, were delivered at the event.

During the delivery, the specialist Unicars staff explained how electric cars operate, the charging process, while also providing useful information regarding maintenance and the online connectivity services that make driving even more functional. After completing the delivery process, Unicars staff reassured the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services personnel that Unicars will continue to be by their side, to help with anything they might need.

Unicars continues to invest, by creating the right infrastructure and thoroughly training its staff to make the transition to e-mobility more efficient. With a full range of electric cars (VW, Audi, Seat/Cupra, Škoda) that can satisfy even the most demanding customer, Unicars is playing a leading role in the new era of electromobility.

CUPRA will become a fully electric brand by 2030

At the recent Munich Motor Show, CUPRA presented its vision for an electric future, in conjunction with the unveiling of the CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept and also announced the opening of the new CUPRA City Garage in Munich. Wayne Griffiths, CEO of CUPRA said, ‘Our ambition is to become a purely electric brand by 2030. The CUPRA Born is being launched this year and the CUPRA Tavascan will follow in 2024’.

The urban electric UrbanRebel is a key strategic project for the company, which aims to produce more than 500,000 cars per year in Spain after 2025. Based on this project, the company has an ambitious plan for Spain called ‘Future: Fast Forward’. The main purpose of this project is to transform and lead the country's automotive industry into an electric future. CUPRA has sold more than 100,000 vehicles in the three years of its existence. The flagship Formentor accounted for two-thirds of the company's sales, between January and August, and CUPRA recorded a three-digit increase compared to the same period last year. The brand also recorded an initial turnover of over €1 billion in 2021, with a significant presence in major European markets like Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy and France while it expanded its operations to Mexico, Israel and Turkey.

As an important part of CUPRA's globalisation strategy, the company chose Munich as the location of the brand new City Garage. A unique location in the heart of the German city, housed in a historic building in the Odeonsplatz area. The new City Garages will allow the brand to offer an unconventional and unique customer experience, putting people at the center of its distribution strategy. Further new locations for a City Garage are Milan, Madrid, Rotterdam, Lisbon and Berlin while a City Garage is scheduled to open in Sydney in 2022.

At the same time CUPRA announced the start of production of their first purely electric model, the CUPRA Born, at the factory in Zwickau, Germany. The company's second purely electric model, the CUPRA Tavascan, will go into production in 2024.

World premiere for the Volkswagen ID.LIFE concept car

Volkswagen is once again speeding up the transformation to electric mobility with its ACCELERATE strategy, making sustainable mobility accessible to even more people by 2025, a whole two years earlier than originally planned, Volkswagen will launch an ID. family model for the small car segment. It will cost approximately 20,000 euros. The ID. LIFE concept car, which was presented at the International Motor Show IAA MOBILITY 2021 in Munich, gives an impression of how a vehicle of this type would look.

The design of the ID. LIFE is strikingly clear, pared-down and high-quality. Decorative elements and add-on parts are dispensed with, as is any complex mix of materials. The horizontal division between the body, glass surfaces and roof also contributes to the car’s purist appearance. An individualised and removable roof made of air chamber textile lends an open-air feeling in the ID. LIFE, while also reducing the vehicle weight.

Electric motor drives the front wheels. The ID. LIFE is based on a smaller variant of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) that has been developed specifically for the small car segment. This is the first time a vehicle based on the MEB has front-wheel drive. With its 172 kW electric motor, the ID. LIFE accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, while its 57 kWh high-voltage battery enables a range of some 400 kilometres (WLTP). The ID. LIFE is a reliable companion for digital experiences of various kinds. For example, it can be converted into a cinema or gaming lounge in no time at all. The vehicle comes with a video game console and projector, as well as a projection screen that extends from the dash panel when required. Other devices can be connected as needed to the 230-volt / 16-amp power supply in the interior. The seating design, too, is extremely flexible, in keeping with the idea of the car as a companion for all situations and lifestyles. For instance, the front seat bench can be completely folded down, as can the rear seat bench. This enables a range of different possibilities, from cinema seating, to a bed measuring around two metres in length, to a cargo version that maximises luggage volume.

Cameras and a display replace both the exterior and interior mirrors. Essential driving functions are controlled via a touch panel on the hexagonal, open-topped steering wheel, and a smartphone can be integrated in the operating system.

ACCELERATE strategy is speeding up the transformation process. The expansion of the ID. family into the small car segment at prices starting from 20,000 euros is another key step towards fully electrified mobility.

ŠKODA AUTO wins COMPANYBEST 2020 award

Europe’s largest independent automotive jury AUTOBEST has awarded ŠKODA AUTO the ‘COMPANYBEST 2020’ prize. The international journalists from 32 countries recognised the Czech car manufacturer’s strong development in numerous international markets as well as its implementation of innovative concepts in production. In addition to the digitalisation project ‘dProduction’ at the Kvasiny site, the jury also praised the parallel production of MQB and MEB vehicles on the same production line in Mladá Boleslav. The award ceremony for the winners, which had been announced in November 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was held last Thursday evening in Barcelona. The event was rescheduled with Tomáš Kotera, Head of Corporate and Internal Communications at ŠKODA AUTO receiving the award on behalf of the Czech car manufacturer.

The independent ‘AUTOBEST’ jury of automotive journalists representing 32 European countries commended ŠKODA AUTO for the positive development of its new registrations as well as for increasing its market share in numerous international markets. Among other things, the journalists also praised the attractive design of its models, the customer-oriented expansion of the model portfolio and the practical ‘Simply Clever’ ideas that characterise the brand.

In addition, ŠKODA AUTO impressed the committee with its innovative production concept; at the main plant in Mladá Boleslav, the car manufacturer produces the OCTAVIA and KAROQ models based on the Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB) and the ENYAQ iV, which is based on the Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB), in parallel and with complete flexibility on the same production line. In addition, AUTOBEST awarded the paperless digitalisation project ‘dProduction’, which guides employees at the Czech plant in Kvasiny through production steps, documentation and quality control.

ŠKODA AUTO was also among the award winners in 2019; the digital assistant ‘Laura’ received the ‘SMARTBEST’ award as Innovation of the Year for the interaction between the driver and artificial intelligence.

Now in production - The purely electric CUPRA Born

CUPRA has given the green light to start production of its first 100% electric car, the CUPRA Born. CEO Wayne Griffiths and the company's Executive Committee visited the brand's plant in Zwickau, Germany, which is also Europe's largest electric car manufacturing plant to mark the opening of the new model's production line. The Born's production marks the start of a new era for CUPRA, which has stated that from 2030 onwards it will produce exclusively electric cars.

Having 100% CUPRA DNA and an impressive design brief, inspired by the El Born neighbourhood of Barcelona, hence the name, the first CUPRA Born units have already rolled off the production line, proving that electric cars can be exciting, combining zero impact on the environment with some unique benefits. With this new vehicle, the company aims to increase the total sales of CUPRA by 20%, reaching new markets, especially in countries that have embraced electric motoring.

With the release of this model, the company's new distribution and customer relationship strategy will be launched. Additionally, customers will have the option to acquire a CUPRA Born through a subscription model. The Zwickau plant is the first production plant of the Volkswagen Group to produce 100% electric vehicles and is considered the largest and most efficient electric plant in Europe. With a daily production of up to 1,400 vehicles, the German plant has an annual production capacity of about 330,000 electric cars.

CUPRA Born is the first model of the brand to use a net CO²- neutral concept, according to which energy from renewable sources is used in the supply chain. The model also has seats made of sustainable materials sourced from the Mediterranean Sea. In this way, the new CUPRA Born will help reduce CO² emissions and achieve European targets. Thanks to the collaboration with SEAQUAL INITIATIVE, the brand will also contribute to the circular economy and the care of the Mediterranean and its environment.

ŠKODA OCTAVIA: 25 years at the top

The first days of September in 1996 marked the start of the successful era of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA model, which is now celebrating 25 years of life. The car was officially presented on 1st September, and two days later the modern plant in Mladá Boleslav began mass production of the Czech company’s new model. The model took advantage of all the technology of the Volkswagen Group in this category, such as the latest generation PQ34 platform, which was also used for the VW Golf IV and Audi A3. Engines, gearboxes and some other components, such as seats, were also identical to the Volkswagen Group's siblings. However, Dirk van Braeckel and his team made sure that the car would have its own character, with timeless elegance, while the car was designed for the first time with the help of the CAD design programme. Great emphasis was also placed on passive and active passenger safety, with front and side airbags, while it was the company’s first model to be equipped with an ABS braking system, which was standard equipment in the top version and optional equipment for all the rest. For this reason, OCTAVIA was the company’s first vehicle to be awarded 4 stars for safety by Euro-NCAP.

In the first year of production, the model was available with a choice of either two four-cylinder petrol engines or a turbo-diesel engine, officially starting the story of this model with many characters. The following year, the OCTAVIA COMBI estate made its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and in February 1998 without any major alterations, the concept became a reality as production began. World demand for COMBI was so great that the company was forced to open a second production line in October 1998.

The Octavia was further updated in 2000; when the model became available as a Classic, Ambiente, Elegance or the Laurin & Klement special edition. New comfort and safety systems such as ESP for Vehicle Stability Control made their first appearance aboard a ŠKODA. Of course a performance version wasn’t absent from the Czech company's range, with the OCTAVIA RS being first released in 2001. The successful and renewed model made its appearance in Cyprus during the same year, being displayed in Unicars showrooms in four engine versions (three petrol ones and a diesel) with horsepower output starting at 110 and reaching 200 for the four-wheel drive version.

Unicars celebrates World Electric Vehicle Day with a full range of vehicles

Today, Thursday, 9th September, is World EV day. It is the International Day that recognises the vital importance of electric mobility and the opportunity to grasp the crucial role that electrification plays in our transition to sustainable transport and a zero-emission future. Unicars will play a major role in this future. With many and varied coordinated actions taking place in the wider operation of the company, its environmental footprint will soon be zero, thus contributing to a cleaner and kinder environment.

For Unicars the future is distinctly electric. Electrification is the future and the future is already here with the most complete range of electric cars to meet every need!

From the premium Audi e-tron to the smaller I.D from VW; Unicars is able to offer buyers in Cyprus a range of purely electric vehicles at all levels. Very soon over the next few months, even more electric cars are expected in its showrooms.

The Audi e-tron was the first purely electric SUV presented by Unicars and was later joined by the e-tron Sportback and the powerful e-tron GT. The next chapter for Audi is being written with the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron. Two compact electric SUVs that stand out, not only for their impressive proportions, but also the overall muscular body design.

A mainstay for Volkswagen in the electric age is the ID series. The first step was made with ID.3 that represents a strategically important new chapter in Volkswagen's history. The sequel is being written by another purely electric SUV - the ID.4; a vehicle that stands out with its dynamic design and cutting-edge technology and equipment.

ŠKODA is introducing the new Enyaq iV, a medium-sized SUV that is at the forefront of electrification of its model range. It is eagerly expected very soon in Unicars showrooms.

The future is already here and has been brought by Unicars!

A giant robot at the SEAT S.A. factory

Standing over two and a half metres tall and with a weight of three tonnes, SEAT S.A.’s new robot is the latest member to join the 2,200 other robot ‘employees’ at its factory in Martorell, Spain. The largest robot in the company’s history is capable of lifting weights of up to 400 kg, and its main purpose is to assemble the sides of cars. SEAT S.A. decided to use this large robot due to the fact that it is necessary to transport a large number of parts.

What is the effectiveness of the human and machine cooperation? Full vehicle body assembly is done within 68 seconds. "These robots assemble key sections of the vehicle, such as the sides. As they can lift more weight, they carry out two operations at the same time, increasing the quality of the parts” said the Head of Robotics at Martorell, Miguel Pozanco.

SEAT S.A. has other robots that can carry up to 700 kg, but in this case, they chose the precision of the new robot instead of just pure mechanical force. "There’s a relationship between the weight the robot can carry and its reach. In other words, holding a bucket of water with your arm next to your body isn’t the same as holding it with your arm outstretched. This giant can carry 400 kilos at almost four metres from its central axis" explains Pozanco.

This is a great innovation, since the same robot can join the three side parts and transport them to the welding site without the help of another machine. This has been achieved thanks to the incorporation of a linear axis that allows it to move up to four metres. The robots are equipped with software that allows remote monitoring of all their operating data, such as motor consumption, temperature, torque and acceleration. "By analysing this data, we can predict any unforeseen events. In other words, predictive maintenance is carried out, which ensures quality and accuracy on an ongoing basis" concludes Miguel Pozanco.

Volkswagen at the top of private car sales in the Cyprus market.

Volkswagen has made a dynamic start to the year. The first two months’ sales figures put VW at the top of the list of private saloon car sales with a market share of 11.6%! The two major players in this success were T-Roc and T-Cross, whose sales show why Unicars has deservedly earned the title of ‘SUVXpert’ in the Cyprus automotive market!

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the T-Roc had a market share of 17.8% putting it in first place in its category, which is a percentage increase of 25.35% compared to the corresponding months of the previous year. A similarly successful course was taken by the T-Cross model, with a market share of 10.6% (+16.5% compared to 2020). These are two vehicles that belong to the rapidly-growing compact SUV class that offer practicality, efficient engines along with upgraded connectivity and driver aids.

All of the above follow the upward trend Unicars had in 2020; when in a declining market, managed to increase its share in the Cyprus market by 5,30% compared to 2019. Increase of market share for Unicars in 2020.

Unicars continues to increase its market share with an impressive pace. This is shown in the official statistics of new car registrations for 2020 (Jan-Dec), where, despite the downward trend of the car market, the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda brands continue to increase their shares compared to 2019.The company managed to achieve a market share of 17.28% for new private saloon car registrations, which is translated to an increase of 5.3% over 2019. This figure is particularly significant when we consider the significant decline in the overall market for new cars in our country.

More precisely, Audi presented an increase in market share of 11.76% compared to 2019; a percentage that shows the preference of the customers for a brand that has a full range of models in its ranks and especially in the popular category of SUVs. The flagship of the German brand’s success was the Audi Q3, which managed to raise its market share in its category to 4.8%; a percentage increase of 45.45% compared to 2019.

Skoda also achieved a 53.33% market share increase in private saloon sales, showing that their SUVs have now become firmly established in the consciousness of the Cypriot buyer. The Skoda Karoq, a model which belongs to the rapidly growing class of compact SUV, achieved the largest market share increase in its category, one that touched 40%. It is an impressive SUV that stands out by its comfortable interior space, connectivity services and safety systems. SEAT maintained a stable market share in 2020, even without the addition of any new models to its range. This success is mainly due to the dynamic presence of Arona, a model with an excellent value to price ratio that rewards buyers with their purchase.

Volkswagen has maintained its rates at 2019 levels and continues the upward trend that began at the end of 2018! Worthy of mention is the successful course of VW T-Cross, which increased its sales sharply, which resulted in the increase of its market share in its category by 61.11%! A practical and compact SUV, with mobile online services and driver aids which form it to be one of the most popular in its class.

The numbers demonstrate in the most emphatic way the preference of the buying public for Unicars, but also for the high standard of After-Sales services that the company consistently offers.

AudiStream: An online ticket for the unique world of Audi

Once again, Audi displays its talent for innovation and is providing the new AudiStream service. It offers the opportunity to customers and fans of the brand to follow the production process online. The Audi factory in Ingolstadt is open for visitors virtually. The visitor can plan an interactive virtual tour at www.audi.stream and take part in a unique Audi experience, without leaving home.

With the use of videos, participants see how an Audi is made, from the first steps of production in the press room to the manual operations at the final assembly stage. For example, the processes for an Audi A3 in the body shop can be seen, as can sections of the A4 assembly line.

Furthermore, the tour guide presents and explains many technical highlights of the fascinating Audi world, while answering the questions of virtual visitors. Armed with the knowledge and experience gained from a large number of tours of the factory, the tour guides can plan out the approximately twenty minute online tour. The exact length of time depends on the interests of individual visitors.

Virtual visitors choose the appropriate live AudiStream, the day and time, the language (German or English) at www.audi.stream with no charge (other than possible charges from providers for the use of data).

With AudiStream, Audi becomes the first manufacturer offering online tours at one of its factories. ‘Audi live at the Ingolstadt factory’ has been available since November 2019 and now people can book additional live tours. Other sectors of the Audi world will soon be open to virtual visitors.
